Waterfall Trail in Havelock Island

Havelock is not a place people associate with waterfalls, and that is fair enough, because for part of the year there is not much of one. But the island interior is forested and hilly enough to hold rain-fed streams, and when the rain has been doing its job there is water falling through the trees a couple of hours' walk from the coast.

The trail is as much the point as the destination. You walk through tropical forest on natural ground with a naturalist, over roots and rock and across stream beds, picking up what is growing and living around you as you go. You finish at the water. Then you walk back.

Why do the waterfall trail?

  • The other Havelock. Inland, forested and hilly, which is not the island most visitors ever see.
  • A real walk. Longer and rougher than our other trails, for people who want to put some effort in.
  • Fresh water instead of salt: a change after a week of sea, boats and reef.
  • Naturalist-led. The forest between the road and the water is the substance of this walk, not just the approach to it.
  • Best when the diving is worst. The wetter months that make the sea choppy are exactly the months this trail comes into its own.

Be clear about this one before you book: the waterfall is seasonal and rain-fed. After good rain it runs well. After a dry spell it can be a trickle or nothing at all. We will tell you honestly what it is doing before you commit. The forest walk is worth doing either way, but if a strong waterfall is the whole reason you are booking, ask us first.

A rain-fed waterfall, and why the season matters

The Andaman Islands catch two monsoons, not one. The southwest monsoon runs through the middle of the year and the northeast monsoon follows later in the year, which is why these islands are wet for a long stretch and why annual rainfall here is high by Indian standards.

Havelock is a small island, so its streams are short and steep and they are fed directly by rain rather than by snowmelt or a large catchment. That has one direct consequence for you: flow tracks recent rainfall, not the calendar. Two heavy days will have the waterfall running well within a day. Ten dry days will reduce it to seepage, whatever the month says.

What the waterfall does through the year

Wet months
Strongest flow

During and just after the monsoon periods the stream runs hard and the waterfall is at its most impressive. The trail is also at its muddiest and most slippery, so this is the trade-off.

Post-monsoon
Moderate flow

Residual water keeps the stream going for a while after the rain eases. Often the best combination of decent flow and a walkable trail.

Dry spells
Low or no flow

In an extended dry period the waterfall may be reduced to a trickle or stop. The forest walk still stands on its own, but manage your expectations about the water.

What the trail is actually like

This is the roughest of our walks. Expect:

  • Natural forest ground with exposed roots, loose rock and uneven footing the whole way.
  • Mud, sometimes a great deal of it, and slippery sections after rain.
  • Stream crossings, where your feet will get wet. Plan for it rather than trying to avoid it.
  • Some gradient. Not climbing, but you will notice you are going uphill.
  • 2 to 3 hours in total, there and back, at a moderate pace with stops.

None of this requires trekking experience. It does require footwear that grips and a willingness to get dirty.

The forest along the way

The route runs through the same tropical evergreen forest that covers most of the island: tall dipterocarps, buttressed hardwoods, strangler figs, with bamboo and cane in the gaps and orchids and ferns growing on the branches. The stream courses are the best of it, because everything in a forest ends up near water sooner or later. Watch for butterflies at the damp patches, land crabs, skinks, kingfishers working the stream, and a great deal of insect life. Your naturalist will point out what is worth stopping for. If the forest itself is what interests you, the forest trail covers it at more length and on easier ground.

Safety around water and rain

  • Rain-fed streams rise fast. Water can come down a stream bed well after the rain has stopped upstream. If your guide says move, move.
  • Wet rock near falling water is the most slippery surface on the walk. Take it slowly and do not scramble for a photograph.
  • Swimming depends entirely on the day. Pools vary in depth and there may be submerged rock and debris after rain. Your guide will tell you whether it is sensible, and sometimes the answer is no.
  • We will call it off if heavy rain has made the trail or the stream unsafe. That is not a maybe.

What your ₹2,000 covers

Naturalist with you throughout

Guiding the route and explaining the forest, not just leading you to the water and back.

Small guided group

Kept small, which matters more on rough ground than on an easy path.

2 to 3 hours

There and back, at a moderate pace with stops along the way.

Forest ecology explained

Trees, stream habitat, insects and the animals that concentrate around fresh water.

Route and safety judgement

Someone who knows the trail in the wet and will change or stop the walk when conditions require it.

Meeting point confirmed at booking

Sent on WhatsApp with your start time.

What to bring

  • Plenty of water. This is the longest of our walks and it is humid throughout
  • Closed shoes with a genuine grip. Of everything on this list, that is the one that matters
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen
  • A cap or hat
  • Quick-drying clothes. You will get wet feet at minimum
  • Leave valuables behind, or carry them in something waterproof. Phones and mud are a bad combination
  • A dry change of clothes in the vehicle is a good idea

Weather and rescheduling

  • Heavy rain can make the trail or the stream unsafe, in which case we change the route, the timing, or move the walk.
  • Free rescheduling to another slot during your stay.
  • Full refund if no suitable slot is available before you leave.
  • If you cancel 72 hours or more before, you get a full refund minus a 5% fee and GST. Inside 72 hours there is no refund. Walks between 15 December and 15 January are non-refundable. See our refund policy.

Waterfall trail in Havelock: frequently asked questions

Is there a waterfall in Havelock Island?

There is, inland in the forested interior, and it is seasonal. It is fed by rain rather than by a large permanent catchment, so it flows well after recent rain and can drop to a trickle or stop during an extended dry spell. We will tell you what it is doing before you book.

What is the best time to do the waterfall trail?

When there has been recent rain. Because the stream is rain-fed, flow follows rainfall rather than the calendar. The wetter months generally give the strongest water and the muddiest trail; drier spells give easier walking and less water. Ask us what it has been doing in the days before your date.

Can we swim at the waterfall?

Sometimes, and it depends on the day. Pool depth changes with flow, and after heavy rain there can be submerged rock or debris that was not there the week before. Your guide will tell you whether it is sensible on the day, and the answer is occasionally no.

How difficult is the waterfall trail?

It is the most demanding of our walks, though still not a technical trek. Expect uneven forest ground, roots, loose rock, mud, some gradient and stream crossings where your feet will get wet, over 2 to 3 hours there and back. No trekking experience is needed, but reasonable fitness and proper footwear are.

What footwear do I need?

Closed shoes with a real grip. This is the single item that makes a difference on this walk, because wet rock and mud are the main hazard. Sandals, flip-flops and smooth-soled trainers are not suitable.

How long is the waterfall trail?

Around 2 to 3 hours in total, including the walk in, time at the waterfall and the walk back, at a moderate pace with stops.

What happens if it rains heavily on my booked day?

We may change the route or the timing, or move your walk to another slot during your stay. Rain-fed streams can rise quickly, so if the trail or the stream bed is unsafe we will not run it. If nothing suitable is available before you leave, you get a full refund.

Is the waterfall trail suitable for children?

For older children who are comfortable walking on rough ground for a couple of hours, yes. For younger children the forest trail or the intertidal walk is a better fit. If you are unsure, message us with their ages and we will tell you honestly.

How much does the waterfall trail cost?

₹2,000 per person, which comes to ₹2,000 per person. That covers the naturalist for the full walk in a small group. If you cancel 72 hours or more before, you get a full refund minus a 5% fee and GST. Inside 72 hours there is no refund.

We had an amazing scuba diving experience! The package included pick-up and drop-off from our hotel, all the necessary diving gear, and a wetsuit, making the entire experience very convenient.
Before the dive, the team provided proper training in shallow water, explaining underwater communication signals, breathing techniques, and how to handle any issues that might arise underwater. This helped us feel more comfortable and prepared.
The divers were extremely supportive, patient, and helpful throughout the experience. I experienced some ear pain during the dive, and my dive instructor was very understanding and patiently helped me equalise the pressure in my ears, which I really appreciated.
Underwater, we got to see a beautiful variety of corals and colourful fish. The experience was truly mesmerising and something we will remember for a long time!
Another great part was that the team clicked plenty of underwater pictures and videos, all included in the package, so we could take home some wonderful memories.
Overall, a fantastic experience with a professional, supportive, and friendly team. Highly recommended for anyone looking to try scuba diving!

Blissful experience in the forest It was good to walk with Naturalist Kailash to the secret beach as he passionately explained the life around the forest 🫶. He also carried binoculars to spot birds of the forest and we were joyful to listen to many bird sounds and spot a beautiful one

Magical experience Just to give a little context why i felt what i felt, so it start way back ten years ago when i as going in swimming pool near my house and i had near death experience as i didn’t know how to swim and i was trying in deep water, so this time naturally i was so afraid to go in the sea and before this i had already tried this scuba diving in Gili island, Bali and at that time also i couldn’t do it though i took the training but eventually i said no to go with them in the ocean. This time also i was more afraid rather but all you need is a hand of someone who will tell you that you can do it don’t worry. So this piece is being taken care by my girlfriend too needless to say but there was one scuba instructor ( Mr. Ketan) special thanks to him, he did an amazing job- he told me at the start don’t think too much as i was panicking at the time of training session and he gave me good 10 minutes to do the practice afterward i was little reluctant to go in the sea again i was this close to say that i would not be able to do this time as well, but i didn’t say anything rather i and my gf went with these guys and then we took a dive and when i was floating at the surface only then he told me that lets do it again, afterwards he took me inside but not that deep just to make me feel comfortable with the water first and then suddenly when i started looking allover in the ocean there were different different type of fish and other mammals it was worth to watch, just want to say this that he held me in there throughout and when i started swimming and got comfortable then i was doing alone too without his help but still he didn’t let me go out of his sight. So yeah it was an amazing experience as the water was crystal clear, mesmerising views underwater, felt like i was flying in there as it becomes so light weight once you start enjoying it and most importantly one item off my bucket list. Also these scuba instructors are well behaved, well mannered, and well spoken too.
