About the Cinque Island day trip from Havelock

Cinque Island is a wildlife sanctuary south of Port Blair. Two uninhabited islands, North Cinque and South Cinque, are joined by a sandbar that shows itself at low tide. No ferry goes there and nobody lives there. The Forest Department caps visitor numbers, so on a normal day you share the beach with a couple of other boats, sometimes none. Most people do Cinque Island as a Port Blair outing. We run it as a full day straight from Havelock, which means you do not have to go back to Port Blair and lose a day of your holiday for it.

It is a long day, 8 hours on the water, and the early start is the price of it. We leave Havelock jetty on a 12-seater speedboat with a cabin and a toilet. The crossing is about 85 km and takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes. You then get 4 to 5 hours at North Cinque. Walk the sandbar while the tide is out, sit on the beach, and snorkel the reef in 2 to 6 metres of clear water, twice if you want. Certified divers can add a guided dive on the deeper reef, 4 to 25 metres down where the black corals grow. First-timers can add a Try Scuba dive with an instructor. A free hot lunch is served on the boat and we have you back at your Havelock hotel by late afternoon.

Cinque Island permit and rules: Cinque Island is a wildlife sanctuary. Every visitor needs a Forest Department permit, issued through the tourism single window in Port Blair, and we file it for you. Send a copy of a government photo ID at least 4 days before the trip. The permit fee under the current schedule is ₹100 per Indian visitor (12 years and above), ₹1,000 per foreign adult and ₹500 per foreign child, paid separately. Day visits only, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Fishing and collecting shells or coral are prohibited, and whatever you carry in comes back with you.

Your day at Cinque Island

Early pickup from your Havelock hotel, on the island by 8:30 AM when it opens, off the island by 2:30 PM, hotel drop by late afternoon. Timings move a little with the tide, the weather and how long the permit check takes on arrival, so treat what follows as a typical day.

Step 1 · 0:00

Hotel pickup & jetty briefing

We collect you from your Havelock hotel around 5:45 AM and drive to the jetty. There is a short safety briefing at the jetty while we fit your snorkel gear and check the permit papers against your ID. Tea, water and breakfast snacks go onboard with you.

Step 2 · 0:30

Departure from Havelock

The boat leaves Havelock jetty around 6:30 AM. It is about 85 km to Cinque, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes at cruising speed. The first stretch past Neil Island is sheltered. The open-water crossing after that is calm in season. Sit inside the cabin or on deck, whichever you prefer.

Step 3 · 2:15

Arrival at North Cinque & permit check

We anchor off the beach on the sheltered side of North Cinque and go ashore by dinghy. Forest Department staff check the permits. Before anyone wanders off, your guide goes over the sanctuary rules. Stay on the beach and the sandbar, take nothing, leave nothing.

Step 4 · 2:30

Sandbar & beach walk

The sandbar between North and South Cinque shows around low tide. Walk out along it with sea on both sides and cool off in the shallows on the way back. The beach behind it is usually empty. Your guide keeps an eye on the tide so nobody is caught out on the bar.

Step 5 · 3:30

Snorkel session 1 (60 min)

Guided snorkel over the reef off the sandbar in 2 to 6 metres. Staghorn, table and brain corals, parrotfish, butterflyfish, clownfish in their anemones, and often a green turtle grazing on the slope. Non-swimmers wear a life vest and your guide stays in the water with the group the whole time.

Step 6 · 4:30

Scuba slot for divers · second snorkel for the rest

Guests who added a dive go out with the dive guide to the deeper reef, 4 to 25 metres, where the black coral formations are. Certified divers do a guided fun dive and first-timers do a Try Scuba with an instructor. Everyone else takes a second snorkel or stays on the beach.

Step 7 · 5:30

Free lunch on the boat & South Cinque from the water

Back on the boat for a free hot lunch, fresh fruit and cold drinks. We cruise slowly past South Cinque and the sandbar from the sea side. Landing on South Cinque needs a separate permission, so we see it from the water only.

Step 8 · 6:30

Cruise back to Havelock

We leave North Cinque by 2:30 PM, well inside the sanctuary's closing time. About 1 hour 45 minutes back. GoPro photos and a short video are sent to your WhatsApp before you step off the boat.

Step 9 · 8:15

Havelock jetty & hotel drop

Back at Havelock jetty around 4:15 PM and dropped at your hotel. If you are on an evening ferry to Port Blair, tell us when you book and we plan the return around it.

This is an open-sea crossing. If the captain calls the weather off, the trip is moved to another day or refunded in full. The sandbar depends on the tide. On high-tide days it is a shallow wade rather than a dry walk.

Not suitable for: children under 5, pregnant guests, anyone with an active ear or sinus infection, recent ear or sinus surgery, or uncontrolled cardiac conditions. Non-swimmers are welcome with a life vest. Snorkelling is for ages 8 and above. If you're unsure, WhatsApp us before booking.

About Cinque Island wildlife sanctuary

Cinque Island sits in the Andaman Sea south of Port Blair and Rutland Island, inside the protected waters around the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary to protect its coral reefs and the animals that use them. Nobody lives there. A small wildlife station was abandoned in 2011. Day visits opened in 2023 under Forest Department rules: a daily cap, a permit for every visitor, and only a few approved boats at a time.

North Cinque and South Cinque

North Cinque Island is the larger one: about 2 km², 3.6 km long, three rocky hills joined by sand, the highest point 154 m with a lighthouse from 1972 on top
South Cinque Island lies 1.5 km further south and is smaller and lower. Landing there needs a separate Forest Department permission, so trips land on North Cinque
Rutland Island is 5.5 km to the north-east across Manners Strait, and Port Blair is roughly 40 km north by sea
Spotted deer, monitor lizards and white-bellied sea eagles live on the islands. Saltwater crocodiles are recorded in the sanctuary too, which is why you swim only where your guide clears

The sandbar

The reef and marine life

Reef top at about 4 m, sloping down to a sandy patch at 25 m. Snorkellers stay in the 2 to 6 m shallows off the sandbar
Black coral formations on the deeper slope, unusual for the Andamans at this depth, plus staghorn, table and brain corals higher up
Green turtles, white-tip reef sharks, giant trevally, barracuda, Napoleon wrasse, clownfish, parrotfish and butterflyfish, with dolphins and the occasional manta on the crossing
Visibility 15 to 30 m from November to April, and the reef sees far fewer divers than Havelock's house reefs

There is no ferry to Cinque Island. The only way is a private boat. Our visit to Havelock (Govind nagar Beach) with Frogman for scuba diving and snorkeling was an absolutely amazing experience. Everything was organized very well by Mr. Suchit Sir, who was present throughout the entire experience and made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times.
The team was extremely professional, supportive, and friendly. Safety was clearly their top priority, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Underwater, we saw beautiful corals and a wide variety of colorful fish in the deep sea it was truly a different and unforgettable world.
I sincerely thank the entire Frogman team and everyone who supported us during the activity. I would highly recommend Frogman to anyone visiting for scuba diving or snorkeling. Keep up the great work, guys!

What an experience! We as a family enjoyed every bit of this activity. We did the lighthouse scuba dive. Never had the experience this close with the variety of fishes and corels. Must do while in Havelock and frogman makes scuba diving comfortable and relaxing. Founder Suchit is very professional and the instructors and divers are also very professional. They all know their responsibilities and passion. Neelkant, Ketan, Rubin and other divers were very patient and explained everything (does and don't) underwater. The team really makes u comfortable and tries to push themselves and us for an excellent experience. If time permits, will book this dive again. If not for sure next time.

We had a wonderful experience with Frogman. We had Neelkanth and Ketan sir as our diving instructors. It was our first time trying it out. The pre-training was very clear. In the first 10 minutes open sea, I even had a panic reaction, but Neelkanth sir calmly got me to the surface and explained my mistake patiently, and we went back underwater, and it went all superbly well!
