Secret Beach in Havelock Island

Havelock has a coastline far longer than the three beaches everybody visits. Radhanagar, Elephant Beach and Kalapathar take almost all the traffic, mostly because you can drive or boat straight to them. The stretches that stay quiet stay quiet for one reason: you have to walk to get there.

This is that walk. A trail through coastal forest with a naturalist, coming out on a quiet stretch of shore, then time there before heading back. Around two hours in total. It is slow and uncomplicated, and it is the closest thing we run to doing nothing somewhere good.

Suitable For
Families and anyone wanting a quiet beach
Best Conditions
Dry weather and a walkable trail

Why go?

  • Space. Somewhere you are not sharing the sand with a few hundred people and a row of stalls.
  • The walk counts: coastal forest on the way in, with a naturalist explaining what you are passing through.
  • Nothing to organise. No gear, no briefing, no certification. Turn up and walk.
  • Good with a camera. Undeveloped shoreline, and low evening light if you take the late slot.
  • Easy on a rest day. Fine inside 24 hours of a flight, and fine on a day the sea is too rough to dive.

The route and timing depend on weather, trail condition and the state of the sea. Sections can be uneven, and after rain some parts get muddy. If conditions make the walk unsafe we move it to another slot or refund it in full.

A quieter stretch of Havelock's coast

Havelock, or Swaraj Dweep, is roughly 113 square kilometres with a long and varied coastline. The famous beaches earned their reputation honestly, but they are also the ones with road access, parking and facilities, which is exactly why they fill up. Walk twenty or thirty minutes off the road in the right direction and the island changes character completely.

How this compares with Havelock's main beaches

What to expect on the way in

The route runs through coastal forest, which is its own habitat and not the same as the island's interior. The trees are shaped by salt and wind, and the transition zone between forest and shore is worth paying attention to. Depending on the section and the season you may see:

  • Land crabs and hermit crabs, often a surprising distance from the water.
  • Coastal birds: collared kingfishers, sea eagles overhead, reef egrets and shorebirds working the tideline.
  • Beach-edge vegetation. Screw pine with its stilt roots and spiky leaves, beach morning glory running vines across the sand, casuarina behind that.
  • Whatever the last tide left. Shells, seed pods, driftwood and, honestly, some plastic, because no coastline anywhere is exempt from that now.

The ground is natural and uneven in places, and after recent rain parts of it will be soft. It is not a difficult walk, but it is not a paved path either.

At the beach

You get time there, which is the whole point. Walk the shore, sit, swim if conditions allow, take photographs. Two things worth being clear about:

  • There are no facilities. No shops, no shacks, no toilets, no fresh water. Bring what you need with you and take your rubbish back out.
  • There are no lifeguards. Quiet beaches are unsupervised beaches. Currents and shore conditions vary through the day and through the year, and your guide will tell you whether swimming is sensible. If the answer is no, it is no.

Morning or afternoon

Morning
Cooler and quietest

An early start gives you comfortable walking temperatures, the calmest sea conditions of the day and the best chance of having the place entirely to yourselves.

Late afternoon
Better light

The last couple of hours before sunset bring the temperature down and the light gets much better for photographs. Slightly warmer walking in, better looking on arrival.

If a quiet shoreline is what you are after, the intertidal walk takes the same idea further and shows you what actually lives on it.

What your ₹2,500 covers

Naturalist with you throughout

Guiding the route and explaining the coastal forest and shoreline you are walking through.

Around 2 hours

Including the walk in, time at the beach and the walk back.

Coastal habitat explained

The forest-to-shore transition, beach vegetation, crabs and coastal birds.

Local judgement on the day

Someone who knows the trail and the shore conditions and will tell you straight whether swimming is a good idea.

Meeting point confirmed at booking

Sent on WhatsApp with your start time.

What to bring

  • Water. There is none there
  • Sunscreen, a cap or hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Comfortable footwear with a grip
  • Swimwear and a towel if you plan to get in and conditions allow
  • A bag for your own rubbish, which goes back out with you

Weather and rescheduling

  • Rain, tide and sea state can all affect access, so the route or timing may change on the day.
  • Free rescheduling to another slot during your stay if conditions are unsuitable.
  • Full refund if nothing suitable is available before you leave.
  • If you cancel 72 hours or more before, you get a full refund minus a 5% fee and GST. Inside 72 hours there is no refund. Walks between 15 December and 15 January are non-refundable. See our refund policy.

Secret Beach Havelock: frequently asked questions

Where is Secret Beach in Havelock Island?

It is a quiet stretch of shoreline reached on foot through coastal forest, away from Havelock's road-accessible beaches. We confirm the meeting point when you book. The walk in is part of the experience and is the reason the beach stays quiet.

How do you get to Secret Beach?

On foot, with a guide, along a natural trail through coastal forest. There is no road to it, which is exactly why it is not crowded. The full outing including the walk in, time at the beach and the walk back is around two hours.

Can you swim at Secret Beach?

Sometimes, depending on the conditions on the day. There are no lifeguards and no facilities on a quiet beach, and currents and shore conditions change through the day and through the year. Your guide will tell you honestly whether swimming is sensible, and the answer is sometimes no. Bring swimwear and a towel in case it is a yes.

How long is the walk to Secret Beach?

The whole outing runs about two hours, which covers the walk in, time at the beach, and the walk back. The pace is easy with stops along the way.

How difficult is the walk?

Not difficult, but not a paved path either. The ground is natural and uneven in sections, and after rain parts of it are soft or muddy. Comfortable footwear with a grip handles it. Most reasonably mobile people, including children, manage it without trouble.

Is Secret Beach really secret?

No, and we would rather say so. It is a quiet beach that takes a walk to reach, which keeps the numbers down compared with Radhanagar or Elephant Beach. You may well see other people. What you will not see is a crowd, stalls or parked vehicles.

Are there shops, toilets or fresh water there?

None of the above. Carry your own water and anything else you need, and take your rubbish back out with you. That absence of facilities is a large part of why it stays quiet.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, for children who are happy walking for around two hours on uneven ground. Shoes with a grip help. Because there are no lifeguards, children need to be supervised closely at the water.

How much does the Secret Beach walk cost?

₹2,500 per person, which comes to ₹2,500 per person. That covers the naturalist for the full outing in a small group. If you cancel 72 hours or more before, you get a full refund minus a 5% fee and GST. Inside 72 hours there is no refund.

Our visit to Havelock (Govind nagar Beach) with Frogman for scuba diving and snorkeling was an absolutely amazing experience. Everything was organized very well by Mr. Suchit Sir, who was present throughout the entire experience and made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times.
The team was extremely professional, supportive, and friendly. Safety was clearly their top priority, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Underwater, we saw beautiful corals and a wide variety of colorful fish in the deep sea it was truly a different and unforgettable world.
I sincerely thank the entire Frogman team and everyone who supported us during the activity. I would highly recommend Frogman to anyone visiting for scuba diving or snorkeling. Keep up the great work, guys!

Happy about the decision to do scuba with Frogman What an experience! We as a family enjoyed every bit of this activity. We did the lighthouse scuba dive. Never had the experience this close with the variety of fishes and corels. Must do while in Havelock and frogman makes scuba diving comfortable and relaxing. Founder Suchit is very professional and the instructors and divers are also very professional. They all know their responsibilities and passion. Neelkant, Ketan, Rubin and other divers were very patient and explained everything (does and don't) underwater. The team really makes u comfortable and tries to push themselves and us for an excellent experience. If time permits, will book this dive again. If not for sure next time.

Fantastic first experience in scuba diving. We had a wonderful experience with Frogman. We had Neelkanth and Ketan sir as our diving instructors. It was our first time trying it out. The pre-training was very clear. In the first 10 minutes open sea, I even had a panic reaction, but Neelkanth sir calmly got me to the surface and explained my mistake patiently, and we went back underwater, and it went all superbly well!

Best Scuba Experience with Frogman It would highly recommend this business to go without any hesitation. We were 3 people and each one had 1 instructor with them. We got a 5 min training before the dive and then explored the underwater world. Saw fishes and corals and safety was well taken care off.
