Follow a forest trail through Havelock's interior to a seasonal waterfall. Uneven ground, tropical vegetation and a naturalist explaining the forest along the way. 2 to 3 hours. Water flow depends on recent rain.
Want more details?Havelock is not a place people associate with waterfalls, and that is fair enough, because for part of the year there is not much of one. But the island interior is forested and hilly enough to hold rain-fed streams, and when the rain has been doing its job there is water falling through the trees a couple of hours' walk from the coast.
The trail is the point as much as the destination. You walk through tropical forest on natural ground with a naturalist, over roots and rock and across stream beds, learning what is growing and living around you, and you finish at the water. Then you walk back.
Be clear about this one before you book: the waterfall is seasonal and rain-fed. After good rain it runs well. After a dry spell it can be a trickle or nothing at all. We will tell you honestly what it is doing before you commit. The forest walk is worth doing either way, but if a strong waterfall is the whole reason you are booking, ask us first.
The Andaman Islands catch two monsoons, not one. The southwest monsoon runs through the middle of the year and the northeast monsoon follows later in the year, which is why these islands are wet for a long stretch and why annual rainfall here is high by Indian standards.
Havelock is a small island, so its streams are short and steep and they are fed directly by rain rather than by snowmelt or a large catchment. That has one direct consequence for you: flow tracks recent rainfall, not the calendar. Two heavy days will have the waterfall running well within a day. Ten dry days will reduce it to seepage, whatever the month says.
During and just after the monsoon periods the stream runs hard and the waterfall is at its most impressive. The trail is also at its muddiest and most slippery, so this is the trade-off.
Residual water keeps the stream going for a while after the rain eases. Often the best combination of decent flow and a walkable trail.
In an extended dry period the waterfall may be reduced to a trickle or stop. The forest walk still stands on its own, but manage your expectations about the water.
This is the roughest of our walks. Expect:
None of this requires trekking experience. It does require footwear that grips and a willingness to get dirty.
The route runs through the same tropical evergreen forest that covers most of the island: tall dipterocarps, buttressed hardwoods, strangler figs, bamboo and cane in the gaps, with orchids and ferns growing on the branches. Stream courses are the best part of it, because water in a forest concentrates life. Watch for butterflies at damp patches, land crabs, skinks, kingfishers along the stream and a lot of insect activity. Your naturalist will point out what is worth stopping for. If the forest itself is what interests you, the forest trail covers it at more length and on easier ground.
Guiding the route and explaining the forest, not just leading you to the water and back.
Kept small, which matters more on rough ground than on an easy path.
There and back, at a moderate pace with stops along the way.
Trees, stream habitat, insects and the animals that concentrate around fresh water.
Someone who knows the trail in the wet and will change or stop the walk when conditions require it.
Sent on WhatsApp with your start time.
There is, inland in the forested interior, and it is seasonal. It is fed by rain rather than by a large permanent catchment, so it flows well after recent rain and can drop to a trickle or stop during an extended dry spell. We will tell you what it is doing before you book.
When there has been recent rain. Because the stream is rain-fed, flow follows rainfall rather than the calendar. The wetter months generally give the strongest water and the muddiest trail; drier spells give easier walking and less water. Ask us what it has been doing in the days before your date.
Sometimes, and it depends on the day. Pool depth changes with flow, and after heavy rain there can be submerged rock or debris that was not there the week before. Your guide will tell you whether it is sensible on the day, and the answer is occasionally no.
It is the most demanding of our walks, though still not a technical trek. Expect uneven forest ground, roots, loose rock, mud, some gradient and stream crossings where your feet will get wet, over 2 to 3 hours there and back. No trekking experience is needed, but reasonable fitness and proper footwear are.
Closed shoes with a real grip. This is the single item that makes a difference on this walk, because wet rock and mud are the main hazard. Sandals, flip-flops and smooth-soled trainers are not suitable.
Around 2 to 3 hours in total, including the walk in, time at the waterfall and the walk back, at a moderate pace with stops.
We may change the route or the timing, or move your walk to another slot during your stay. Rain-fed streams can rise quickly, so if the trail or the stream bed is unsafe we will not run it. If nothing suitable is available before you leave, you get a full refund.
For older children who are comfortable walking on rough ground for a couple of hours, yes. For younger children the forest trail or the intertidal walk is a better fit. If you are unsure, message us with their ages and we will tell you honestly.
₹1,500 per person plus 18% GST, which comes to ₹1,770 per person. That covers the naturalist for the full walk in a small group. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
