Scuba diving in Andaman for non swimmers is what we do every day at Frogman in Havelock Island. Every try dive is guided by a dedicated instructor who stays with you underwater the entire time. You breathe normally through a regulator, and your instructor handles all the equipment and buoyancy - your only job is to relax and enjoy the reef.
Havelock offers some of the best conditions in India for first-time divers: warm water at 27 to 30 degrees year-round, visibility of 15 to 25 metres, and coral reefs full of clownfish, sea turtles, and tropical fish just minutes from shore. Whether you choose a shore dive from the beach or a boat dive to deeper sites, you will see real marine life from your very first dive. See all packages and prices for non swimmers.
No. The idea that you must know swimming before you can scuba dive is the most common doubt we clear up on the phone. At the surface your diving jacket is inflated, so you float whether you can swim or not. Under water, your instructor controls your depth and movement for you. The only skill you actually use is breathing through the regulator, and you practise that while standing in waist-deep water until it feels normal. Most guests tell us the breathing felt strange for the first two or three minutes and then they forgot about it.
You can do scuba diving in Andaman for non swimmers at three main places: North Bay near Port Blair, Bharatpur Beach on Neil Island, and Havelock. North Bay is convenient if you only have a day in Port Blair, but it is also the busiest dive point in the islands, and in season you can spend more time waiting on the beach than breathing under water. Neil is quieter, though the dive scene there is small and slots fill up fast.
Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) is called the scuba capital of India for a reason. Nemo Reef sits at 6 to 12 metres with a sandy, walk-in entry from the beach, the water stays 27 to 30 degrees through the year, and visibility runs 15 to 25 metres on good days. Instructors here take non swimmers under water every day of the season, so the whole process, from briefing to photos, runs without confusion.
Every try dive at Frogman runs on a 1:1 ratio, one instructor for one guest, and that does not change in peak season. Before the dive, your instructor teaches you a few simple hand signals, shows you how to release the pressure in your ears as you go down, and practises mask clearing with you in shallow water. During the dive they stay within arm's reach and hold your jacket whenever you want the extra assurance. Depth stays between 5 and 12 metres, shallower if you ask.
October to May is the best window for scuba diving in Andaman, and morning slots usually get the calmest water. In December and January it is worth booking a day or two ahead. Eat a light breakfast, skip alcohol the night before, and keep a gap of at least 12 hours between your dive and your return flight, 18 to 24 hours is safer. We explain the reason in why you cannot fly right after scuba diving. Try dives cost ₹2,500 to ₹6,500 + GST depending on the site, DSD programmes run ₹3,500 to ₹7,500 + GST, and pickup and drop is free within 5 km of the dive centre.
