Snorkeling in Havelock Island

Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) is the easiest place in Andaman to snorkel. We take guests to nine reefs: Nemo Reef straight off the beach, and eight more a 5 to 25 minute speedboat ride from the jetty. Every one has a shallow reef top, 1 to 5 metres down, so the coral sits right under you the moment you put your face in the water.

You don't need to know how to swim, and you don't need any experience. We provide everything (mask, snorkel, fins, life vest), a guide in the water with you, and the GoPro photos and videos. Guided prices run from ₹2,000 (Nemo Reef, shore entry) to ₹6,000 (Aquarium), and confident swimmers pay ₹500 less at every reef. The speedboat is included at all eight boat reefs, and so is pickup and drop within 5 km. The 9 snorkelling reefs

Prices vary by site. Nemo Reef (Beach No. 2)

  • Access. Shore entry, no boat. Walk in from the sand.
  • Depth. Reef starts at 1 m, goes to 4 m.
  • Who it suits. Families, first-time snorkelers, non-swimmers.
  • Marine life. Clownfish in anemones (the namesake), coral garden, parrotfish, butterflyfish.
  • Season. Stays snorkelable year-round including monsoon.

Tribe Gate (Oval Reef)

  • Access. Boat, 5 minutes from the jetty.
  • Depth. Reef top at 3 to 4 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone. Sheltered site, low currents.
  • Marine life. All five Andaman clownfish species, the most giant clams (Tridacna) on Havelock, two-spot snapper schools.
  • Season. Accessible year-round, calmest March to May.

Red Pillar

  • Access. Boat, 5 to 10 minutes from the jetty.
  • Depth. Reef crest at 2.5 to 3 m, slopes to 14 m.
  • Who it suits. Confident swimmers. Non-swimmers only on calm-tide sessions with a 1:1 guide.
  • Marine life. Clownfish, reef fish schools. Barrel sponges and a sunken scooter or bicycle visible on the reef slope on clear days.
  • Season. October to May. January to March the clearest.

Purple Haze

  • Access. Boat, about 15 minutes from the jetty, on the west coast.
  • Depth. Reef top at 3 to 5 m, then a gentle slope.
  • Who it suits. Anyone on the guided rate. Mild current; your guide picks the calm side of the reef.
  • Marine life. Purple and lavender soft corals and sea fans (the name), loose fusilier schools, clownfish in scattered anemones.
  • Season. October to May. Clearest December to March.

The Slope

  • Access. Boat, 15 to 20 minutes from the jetty, in front of the lighthouse.
  • Depth. Reef top at 3 to 5 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone on the guided rate. Mild, predictable current.
  • Marine life. Coral ridges stepping down like an amphitheatre, cleaning stations where wrasse work over bigger fish, stingrays on the sand.
  • Season. October to May. Visibility peaks December to March.

Lighthouse

  • Access. Boat, 10 to 15 minutes from the jetty.
  • Depth. Reef top at 3 m, slopes to 23 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone. Mild currents, sheltered channel.
  • Marine life. Fusilier and unicornfish schools, parrotfish, barrel sponges. Green turtles pass through February to April.
  • Season. November to April peak.

Juvi's

  • Access. Boat, 10 to 15 minutes from Govind Nagar.
  • Depth. Reef top at 4 m, slopes to 12 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone. Easy drift, no walls or drops.
  • Marine life. A long belt of potato corals (the site's signature), staghorn and cauliflower corals, reef fish schools.
  • Season. December to April peak. October and November also very good.

Turtle Beach

  • Access. Boat along the south-east coast. Plan for a relaxed half-morning.
  • Depth. Reef top at 2 to 4 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone. The calmest water of all nine reefs, and rarely another boat.
  • Marine life. A staghorn coral garden over most of the reef, parrotfish, stingrays. Turtles on some sessions, never guaranteed.
  • Season. October to May. Clearest December to February.

Aquarium

  • Access. Boat, 20 to 25 minutes from the jetty, about 5 km off the south-west coast.
  • Depth. Reef top at 2 to 4 m.
  • Who it suits. Anyone. Sheltered reef, little or no current.
  • Marine life. Dense coral gardens and more anemones with clownfish than any other reef we snorkel. Moray eels on the reef edge.
  • Season. October to May. Best December to April.

How the session runs

Step 1 · 15 min
Meet and briefing
Meet us at the jetty, where your guide runs through the basics: mask fit, breathing through the snorkel, how to clear it if it floods, and hand signals. Life vest on for non-swimmers.
Step 2 · 5 to 25 min
Getting to the site
Speedboat out to the mooring at the boat reefs, or a short walk into the water at Nemo Reef. Usually calm sea through the peak season.
Step 3 · 30 to 40 min
In the water
Float the reef top with your guide alongside you. You stay at the surface the whole time. Guide points things out and takes the GoPro shots.
Step 4 · after
Back to shore and photos
Ride back to the jetty or walk out at Nemo Reef. GoPro photos and videos (20 photos, 2 videos) shared to your phone via WhatsApp before you leave.

Age and health. Ages 6 and above at Nemo Reef (shore entry). Ages 8 and above at the boat sites. Children under 12 need a parent or guardian in the water. Not suitable if you have an active ear infection on the day. Pregnant guests should check with their doctor before joining.

When to snorkel in Havelock

Havelock has two distinct seasons. The dry season (October to May) is peak, with calm water and clear visibility. The monsoon (June to September) closes the boat reefs on rough days, though Nemo Reef stays snorkelable throughout because the bay is sheltered.

Peak season: November to April

  • Calmest water, clearest visibility (often 15 to 25 m)
  • Warm water (26 to 29°C)
  • All 9 reefs usually open
  • Turtles passing through Lighthouse peak February to April
  • Book ahead in December and January, especially around Christmas and New Year

Shoulder: October and May

  • Still excellent conditions, quieter reefs, easier to get same-day slots
  • May can get humid; October is post-monsoon so occasional short showers

Monsoon: June to September

  • Nemo Reef stays snorkelable (sheltered bay)
  • Boat reefs can be cancelled on rough days. Message us before booking.
  • Prices are often lower; fewer tourists on the reefs

Best time of day

Morning slots (7:00 to 11:00) give you the best natural light underwater, which means better GoPro photos and videos. The water is usually calmest in the morning too. If you're prone to seasickness, the boat reefs are best done early.

How long to budget

For a boat reef: around 2 to 3 hours from the jetty and back, depending on how far out it is. For Nemo Reef (shore entry): around 1.5 hours. You'll be in the water for 30 to 40 minutes either way. The rest is briefing, transit, and wrapping up with the photos.

Combine with scuba. Snorkeling at Nemo Reef or Tribe Gate in the morning, then a Try Scuba dive in the afternoon, is a common half-day plan. Message us if you want to combine and we'll set up the timing.

It depends on what you want to see. Nemo Reef at Beach No. 2 is the easiest, because you walk in from the shore (₹2,000 guided). Tribe Gate (Oval Reef) has clownfish and giant clams (₹3,000). Aquarium has the most fish and anemones (₹6,000), and Turtle Beach has the calmest, clearest water (₹5,500). Lighthouse gets green turtles from February to April (₹4,500), Purple Haze has soft purple corals (₹3,500), The Slope has coral ridges and cleaning stations (₹5,000), Red Pillar has barrel sponges (₹2,500) and Juvi's has a long belt of potato corals (₹4,000).

Yes. We give you a life vest that holds you at the surface with no effort, and your guide stays in the water with you the whole session. A lot of our snorkelers can't swim at all. Non-swimmers are welcome at eight of the nine reefs on the guided rate. Red Pillar has a mild to moderate channel current, so non-swimmers go there only on calm-tide sessions, one to one with a guide.

No experience and no certification needed. Your guide briefs you at the jetty (how to wear the mask, breathe through the snorkel, clear it if water gets in) and stays in the water with you the whole session.

Yes. 20 photos and 2 videos are included at every site. Your guide carries the GoPro the whole session and sends the files to your phone via WhatsApp before you leave the jetty. No add-on to select.

Yes. Nemo Reef (shore entry) is suitable from age 6. The boat sites are from age 8. Children under 12 need a parent or guardian in the water with them. We fit child-sized masks and fins at the jetty.

If you want the simplest option, or you're travelling with young kids or nervous swimmers, pick Nemo Reef (shore entry, ₹2,000 guided). If you want a particular reef (giant clams at Tribe Gate, turtles at Lighthouse, the busiest reef at Aquarium, the calmest water at Turtle Beach), pick one of the eight boat reefs. They cost more (₹2,500 to ₹6,000 guided) because the speedboat is included.

Coral garden (staghorn, brain, plate, table corals) and anemones with clownfish at every site. Fish schools above the reef (fusiliers, snappers, parrotfish, sergeant majors). Reef by reef: Tribe Gate has giant clams, Lighthouse has turtles in season, Aquarium has the most anemones and fish, Purple Haze has soft purple corals, The Slope has cleaning stations, Turtle Beach has a staghorn garden, Red Pillar has big barrel sponges deeper down, and Juvi's has potato corals.

November to April is peak. Morning slots are best for the GoPro shots (natural light) and usually the calmest water. Nemo Reef stays snorkelable through the monsoon (June to September) since the bay is sheltered; the boat reefs can be closed on rough monsoon days, so message us before booking if you're travelling in that window.

Not really. Some Elephant Beach boat tickets include a short complimentary snorkel of about five minutes, which is a quick look, not a session. Our guided session is 30 to 40 minutes in the water with a guide beside you and 20 photos and 2 videos. Our Elephant Beach guide explains how that day works.

Both islands have good shallow reefs. Havelock has more reefs to choose from, a shore option and short boat rides to eight more, so it suits most first-timers. Neil Island is smaller and quieter, with its snorkelling mostly close to the beaches. We are based in Havelock and run our sessions only on Havelock reefs.

Do not stand on or touch the coral. It is alive and it cuts skin. Use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard instead of regular sunscreen. Do not chase or touch turtles and fish. Fix a leaking mask before you start, not halfway across the reef. If you cannot swim, keep your life jacket on for the whole session.

    Our visit to Havelock (Govind nagar Beach) with Frogman for scuba diving and snorkeling was an absolutely amazing experience. Everything was organized very well by Mr. Suchit Sir, who was present throughout the entire experience and made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times.
    The team was extremely professional, supportive, and friendly. Safety was clearly their top priority, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Underwater, we saw beautiful corals and a wide variety of colorful fish in the deep sea it was truly a different and unforgettable world.

Lighthouse scuba diving experience
It was a great experience. Instructors were patient enough to explain everything thoroughly. The divers also made us feel comfortable underwater and kept checking on us to see if all was okay. Happy about the decision to do scuba with Frogman
What an experience! We as a family enjoyed every bit of this activity. We did the lighthouse scuba dive. Never had the experience this close with the variety of fishes and corels. Must do while in Havelock and frogman makes scuba diving comfortable and relaxing. Founder Suchit is very professional and the instructors and divers are also very professional. They all know their responsibilities and passion. Neelkant, Ketan, Rubin and other divers were very patient and explained everything (does and don't) underwater. Fantastic first experience in scuba diving.
We had a wonderful experience with Frogman. We had Neelkanth and Ketan sir as our diving instructors. It was our first time trying it out. The pre-training was very clear. In the first 10 minutes open sea, I even had a panic reaction, but Neelkanth sir calmly got me to the surface and explained my mistake patiently, and we went back underwater, and it went all superbly well!

Best Scuba Experience with Frogman

Prices are per person and include GST. Guided means a guide stays in the water with you the whole time. The swimmers rate is for people who are comfortable in open water on their own. Both rates include the mask, snorkel, fins and life vest, 20 GoPro photos and 2 videos, and pickup and drop within 5 km. The speedboat is included at every reef except Nemo Reef, where you walk in from the sand.

When you compare quotes in Havelock, ask two questions: is GST added on top, and is the boat to the reef extra? Many prices you see online leave out one or both. Pickup from Kalapathar or Radhanagar Beach costs extra, and we tell you the amount when you book.

Elephant Beach or a guided reef session?

Elephant Beach is the best-known snorkelling spot in Havelock. The reef starts a few metres from the sand, which is why it is so popular, and also why it gets crowded. Boats to the beach leave the jetty in the morning only, everyone has to leave by late afternoon, and on a very low tide or a windy day the boats do not run.

Snorkelling there is sold on the beach. Some boat tickets include a free snorkel of about five minutes, which is a quick look rather than a real session. Longer sessions cost extra, and photos may or may not be part of the price.

A guided session with us works differently. You go to a reef with few or no other boats, you spend 30 to 40 minutes in the water with a guide beside you, and the photos and videos are included. Can non-swimmers snorkel in Havelock?

Yes, and most of our guests cannot swim. The life jacket keeps you floating at the surface without any effort. You only need to put your face in the water and breathe through the snorkel. On the guided rate, your guide stays next to you and often tows a float ring that you can hold.

The first few minutes feel strange for almost everyone. Breathing only through your mouth takes a little practice, so your guide lets you try it in calm, shallow water before moving over the reef. If the mask leaks or fogs, say so. A good fit fixes most problems.

Non-swimmers can go to eight of the nine reefs. Red Pillar is the exception: there is a channel current, so non-swimmers go there only on a calm tide, one to one with a guide. If you are thinking about going underwater too, read is scuba diving in Andaman safe for non-swimmers.

Which reef should I pick?
  • With young children: Nemo Reef. You walk in from the beach, there is no boat, and children can join from age 6.
  • First time and a bit nervous: Nemo Reef, or Turtle Beach for the calmest water of all nine reefs.
  • The most fish: Aquarium. Dense coral and more anemones with clownfish than anywhere else we go.
  • Clownfish and giant clams: Tribe Gate, five minutes from the jetty.
  • Turtles: Lighthouse from February to April. Turtle Beach sometimes. Nobody can promise a turtle.
  • Unusual coral: Purple Haze for soft purple corals, Juvi's for its long belt of potato coral, The Slope for coral ridges and cleaning stations.
  • Lowest price: Nemo Reef at ₹1,500 on the swimmers rate, or Red Pillar at ₹2,000 if you want a boat ride.

Havelock snorkeling map: where the nine reefs are

Listed from closest to farthest. Each name opens that reef's own page with photos, depth and what you will see.

  1. Nemo Reef: Beach No. 2, you walk in from the sand.
  2. Tribe Gate (Oval Reef): about 5 minutes by boat from the jetty.
  3. Red Pillar: 5 to 10 minutes, by the red channel marker.
  4. Lighthouse: 10 to 15 minutes, in a sheltered channel.
  5. Juvi's: 10 to 15 minutes from Govind Nagar, near John Lawrence Island.
  6. Purple Haze: about 15 minutes, on the west coast.
  7. The Slope: 15 to 20 minutes, on the north-west coast in front of the lighthouse.
  8. Aquarium: 20 to 25 minutes, about 5 km off the south-west coast.
  9. Turtle Beach: along the south-east coast. Keep a relaxed half-morning for it.

Best time for snorkeling at Havelock Island

The season runs from October to May. December to March usually gives the clearest water, often 15 to 25 metres of visibility, and the sea is warm all year at 26 to 29°C.

Go in the morning if you can. The sea is usually calmest before midday, and the sunlight is better for the GoPro photos.

From June to September the monsoon brings rough days. Nemo Reef sits in a sheltered bay and stays open on most days. The boat reefs depend on the sea that morning, so message us before you book a monsoon date.

Age limit and health
  • Children can snorkel from age 6 at Nemo Reef and from age 8 at the boat reefs.
  • Children under 12 need a parent or guardian in the water with them. We have child-size masks and fins.
  • Skip the session if you have an ear infection or a blocked nose that day.
  • If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before you book.
  • Unlike scuba diving, snorkelling needs no gap before your flight, so you can snorkel on your last morning.

Snorkeling packages and combos

Snorkelling takes a morning, so most guests add something else to the same day or the next. A common plan is snorkelling in the morning and a Try Scuba dive in the afternoon.

Our Havelock combo packages pair activities at one set price. If you want your own mix, the package builder lets you add snorkelling to any other activity and shows the discount straight away: 5% for two activities, 8% for three and 10% for four or more. Island trips get up to 5%.
