About the Aquarium Boat Dive

Some dive sites need explaining. This one doesn't - the Aquarium looks exactly like its name. A sheltered fringing reef off Havelock's southwest coast, 10–15 minutes by speedboat from the jetty, with dense hard coral gardens, exceptionally clear water and clouds of colourful reef fish at depths where the sunlight still does its best work. Diving here feels like swimming inside a giant, living aquarium.

The reef flat starts at just 2 m and slopes gently to 15 m, dotted with coral bommies that each host their own small community. Clownfish hold anemones across the reef, snappers and trevally school over the coral, and groupers watch from their crevices. Currents are nil to slight and the site is sheltered from swell - conditions stay calm and predictable on almost every day of the season, which is why so many divers meet the reef here for the first time.

What You'll See at the Aquarium

The Aquarium earns its name on fish density alone. The shallow, sunlit reef supports dense hard coral gardens and a fish community that stays busy all day - the Andaman Islands host over 750 marine fish species, and this small reef feels like a showcase of the highlights. Everything happens at comfortable depths in clear water, so you miss nothing.

The Headliners

  • Clownfish Everywhere - anemones across the reef host resident clownfish; the Havelock region is home to five different clownfish species
  • Giant Groupers - big, intelligent and territorial; they watch you from their crevices
  • Giant Trevally - predatory schools that occasionally put on a dramatic hunting show
  • Napoleon Wrasse - an occasional but unforgettable visitor, with its unmistakable head bump
  • Humphead Parrotfish - large, iconic reef grazers you can hear crunching coral

Reef Fish

  • Snappers schooling in mid-water above the coral
  • Andaman sweetlips - striped juveniles dancing near the bommies
  • Butterflyfish in colourful pairs across the reef zones
  • Triggerfish, angelfish, rabbitfish and pufferfish
  • Needlefish flashing silver just under the surface
  • Barracuda and jackfish passing through the blue
  • Bannerfish and lionfish around the coral heads

Macro Life

  • Octopus - masters of camouflage; most active in the quieter corners of the reef
  • Lobsters - tucked into coral crevices, antennae giving them away
  • Cleaner Shrimp - working their stations around the coral heads
  • Sea Anemones - in a surprising range of colours, each with its clownfish family
  • Nudibranchs - seasonal treasures for sharp-eyed divers
  • Crocodile Fish & Scorpionfish - camouflaged on the bottom; your instructor will point them out

The Coral Gardens

  • Staghorn and table corals form the main structure of the reef
  • Brain corals - massive, dome-shaped, some centuries old
  • Cauliflower coral in dense, intricate thickets
  • Fan corals filtering the gentle current
  • Scattered bommies (coral pinnacles) - each one its own little ecosystem

Best Season for Marine Life

  • December–April - peak clarity and stable fish populations
  • September–November - coral spawning brings exceptional fish numbers
  • March–May - more large visitors (trevally schools) on the reef edge
  • Year-round - the clownfish, groupers and reef fish are residents

About the Dive Site

The Aquarium lies off Havelock's southwest coast, roughly 5 km from the island and a 10–15 minute speedboat ride from the jetty. It is a classic fringing reef - a long, shallow coral structure running parallel to the shore, decorated with scattered bommies and open sand corridors. The site faces west, which shelters it from the northeast swell during peak season - one reason its conditions are so reliably calm.

Location

  • Site: Southwest coast of Havelock Island, ~5 km offshore
  • Boat time: 10–15 minutes from the jetty by speedboat
  • Entry: Boat entry into calm water; boat pick-up at the ascent point
  • Layout: Long reef axis parallel to shore - navigation is simple and intuitive
  • Sand corridors: Open sandy patches between coral sections - perfect for beginners to settle and practise

Conditions

  • Current: Nil to slight; occasionally a mild drift along the reef
  • Surge: Minimal; the site is sheltered from open swell
  • Visibility: 15–25 m through the season; best December–April
  • Water temperature: 28–30°C - warm enough for long, comfortable dives
  • Reliability: Among the most weather-proof sites near Havelock; cancellations are rare in season

Best Time to Dive

  • December–April - the optimal window; stable seas and consistent clarity
  • October–November - fresh post-monsoon conditions, active fish life
  • March–May - warm and calm with excellent marine life encounters
  • June–September - monsoon; the sheltered location still allows dives on calm days

Depth Profile

2–5m Reef flat - dense coral, best light, clownfish
5–10m Bommie zone - coral pinnacles, clouds of fish

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes - the Aquarium is one of Havelock's most beginner-friendly boat dives. The reef starts at just 2 m, currents are nil to slight, and the site is sheltered from waves. Your instructor is physically with you throughout the entire dive. No swimming ability or prior certification is required. First-time divers are guided one-on-one to a maximum of 12 m.

Because that's exactly what it feels like. The combination of dense hard coral gardens, exceptionally clear water and clouds of colourful fish at shallow depth makes diving here feel like swimming inside a giant, living aquarium. It's the kind of site where even the boat crew still looks over the side.

Both include GoPro photos and videos of your dive. The standard package (₹6,500) is 30 minutes underwater at the Aquarium. The Pro upgrade (+₹1,000 = ₹7,500) gives you an extra 15 minutes underwater - 45 minutes total - plus 10 extra GoPro photos and 2 extra videos. The extended time lets you explore more bommies and the deeper reef slope.

Almost certainly. Sea anemones hosting clownfish are spread across the entire reef, and the Havelock region is home to five different clownfish species. Your instructor knows where the busiest anemones are, and the GoPro will be ready when you find your Nemo.

All three are beginner-friendly boat dives. Tribe Gate is a 5-minute ride to a seamount known for clownfish and giant clams. Turtle Beach is a longer premium trip to a pristine staghorn coral garden. The Aquarium sits in between - a quick 10–15 minute ride to a sheltered reef with the densest, most consistent fish activity. If you want maximum fish per minute of dive time, this is the one.

October to May is the season, with December to April the most reliable window - stable seas and 15–25 m visibility. September to November brings coral spawning and exceptional fish numbers. Because the site is sheltered, it often stays diveable on days when exposed sites are not - a good bad-weather choice during the shoulder months.

The listed price of ₹6,500 (standard) or ₹7,500 (Pro) excludes GST. 18% GST applies as per Indian government regulations, bringing the totals to ₹7,670 and ₹8,850 respectively. Your invoice will show the full GST breakdown.
