Walk through coastal forest to one of Havelock's quieter stretches of shoreline, away from Radhanagar and Elephant Beach. Around 2 hours including time at the beach.
Want more details?Havelock has a coastline far longer than the three beaches everybody visits. Radhanagar, Elephant Beach and Kalapathar take almost all the traffic, mostly because you can drive or boat straight to them. The stretches that stay quiet stay quiet for one reason: you have to walk to get there.
This is that walk. A trail through coastal forest with a naturalist, coming out on a secluded stretch of shore, then time there before heading back. Around two hours in total. It is a slow, uncomplicated outing and it is the closest thing we run to doing nothing in a good place.
The route and timing depend on weather, trail condition and the state of the sea. Sections can be uneven, and after rain some parts get muddy. If conditions make the walk unsafe we move it to another slot or refund it in full.
Havelock, or Swaraj Dweep, is roughly 113 square kilometres with a long and varied coastline. The famous beaches earned their reputation honestly, but they are also the ones with road access, parking and facilities, which is exactly why they fill up. Walk twenty or thirty minutes off the road in the right direction and the island changes character completely.
| Beach | How you get there | How busy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radhanagar (Beach No. 7) | Road, about 20 minutes from the jetty | Very busy, especially at sunset | Wide white sand, the classic Havelock sunset |
| Elephant Beach | Boat, or a walk through forest | Busy, and full of water sports | Snorkelling and water sports |
| Kalapathar | Road, along the east coast | Moderate, busiest at sunrise | Black rock against white sand, sunrise |
| This walk | On foot through coastal forest | Quiet | Space, quiet, and the walk itself |
The route runs through coastal forest, which is its own habitat and not the same as the island's interior. The trees are shaped by salt and wind, and the transition zone between forest and shore is worth paying attention to. Depending on the section and the season you may see:
The ground is natural and uneven in places, and after recent rain parts of it will be soft. It is not a difficult walk, but it is not a paved path either.
You get time there, which is the whole point. Walk the shore, sit, swim if conditions allow, take photographs. Two things worth being clear about:
An early start gives you comfortable walking temperatures, the calmest sea conditions of the day and the best chance of having the place entirely to yourselves.
The last couple of hours before sunset bring the temperature down and the light gets much better for photographs. Slightly warmer walking in, better looking on arrival.
If a quiet shoreline is what you are after, the intertidal walk takes the same idea further and shows you what actually lives on it.
Guiding the route and explaining the coastal forest and shoreline you are walking through.
Kept small, which rather matters when the whole point is a quiet beach.
Including the walk in, time at the beach and the walk back.
The forest-to-shore transition, beach vegetation, crabs and coastal birds.
Someone who knows the trail and the shore conditions and will tell you straight whether swimming is a good idea.

It is a quiet stretch of shoreline reached on foot through coastal forest, away from Havelock's road-accessible beaches. We confirm the meeting point when you book. The walk in is part of the experience and is the reason the beach stays quiet.
On foot, with a guide, along a natural trail through coastal forest. There is no road to it, which is exactly why it is not crowded. The full outing including the walk in, time at the beach and the walk back is around two hours.
Sometimes, depending on the conditions on the day. There are no lifeguards and no facilities on a quiet beach, and currents and shore conditions change through the day and through the year. Your guide will tell you honestly whether swimming is sensible, and the answer is sometimes no. Bring swimwear and a towel in case it is a yes.
The whole outing runs about two hours, which covers the walk in, time at the beach, and the walk back. The pace is easy with stops along the way.
Not difficult, but not a paved path either. The ground is natural and uneven in sections, and after rain parts of it are soft or muddy. Comfortable footwear with a grip handles it. Most reasonably mobile people, including children, manage it without trouble.
No, and we would rather say so. It is a quiet beach that takes a walk to reach, which keeps the numbers down compared with Radhanagar or Elephant Beach. You may well see other people. What you will not see is a crowd, stalls or parked vehicles.
None of the above. Carry your own water and anything else you need, and take your rubbish back out with you. That absence of facilities is a large part of why it stays quiet.
Yes, for children who are happy walking for around two hours on uneven ground. Shoes with a grip help. Because there are no lifeguards, children need to be supervised closely at the water.
₹1,500 per person plus 18% GST, which comes to ₹1,770 per person. That covers the naturalist for the full outing in a small group. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
