About the Nitrox Enriched Air Diver Course

Nitrox is the most popular specialty certification in recreational diving for a simple reason: swap the air in your tank for enriched air (32–36% oxygen instead of 21%) and your no-decompression limits get meaningfully longer at recreational depths.

At 18 metres on standard air you have a no-decompression limit of around 56 minutes. On 32% nitrox that extends to over 90 minutes. At Havelock's best reef sites — Nemo Reef, Lighthouse, Turtle Bay — that extra time is the difference between a rushed look and a proper, relaxed exploration.

This is a 1-day specialty course. The morning covers the essential theory and hands-on gas analyser workshop; the afternoon is optional nitrox dives to put it all into practice. You leave with a globally recognised RAID Nitrox certification and the ability to use nitrox tanks at any dive centre worldwide.

Who Can Join?

The Nitrox course is open to any certified diver. It's one of the quickest, most practical specialty certifications you can add to your diving portfolio.

Open Water Certified
Any Open Water certification from any recognised agency (RAID, PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS, etc.) is the only diving prerequisite. You don't need Advanced certification — Open Water is sufficient.
Minimum Age: 15 Years
Participants must be at least 15 years old. All under-18s require parental consent. There is no upper age limit — nitrox is actually particularly popular with older divers due to the reduced nitrogen loading and faster surface interval recovery.
Complete E-Learning First
RAID's nitrox e-learning is short — typically 1–2 hours online. We strongly recommend completing it before your course day so the morning workshop focuses on practical application rather than reading. Ask us to set up your RAID account when you book.
Combine With Any Course
Nitrox can be taken alongside any other course at Frogman. Doing your Advanced 35 dives on nitrox? Add the Nitrox cert first. Planning a multi-day fun dive trip on Havelock? Add Nitrox the day before and use enriched air for every dive.
No Medical Requirements Beyond OW
No additional medical declaration is needed beyond what you completed for your Open Water certification. If your health status has changed significantly since you were certified, a standard dive medical check is recommended.
Dive Computer Recommended
To get the most from nitrox diving, a personal dive computer that supports nitrox mode is ideal — it handles all the MOD and NDL calculations automatically. We provide dive computers during the course. If you're considering buying your own, we offer student discounts on gear purchases.

Your Course Day

The Nitrox course is structured as a focused half-day of theory and practical workshop, with the afternoon free for nitrox dives if you want to immediately put your new cert to use.

Before You Arrive
E-Learning (1–2 Hours Online)
Complete the RAID Nitrox e-learning modules on your phone or laptop before your course day. Covers oxygen physics, MOD calculations, NDL extension tables, and oxygen toxicity risks. Takes 1–2 hours and means the morning workshop goes straight to practical application.
Morning – Session 1
Theory Review & MOD Calculations
Knowledge review with your instructor — oxygen physics, why nitrox extends bottom time, how to calculate Maximum Operating Depth for any gas mix, and the signs and prevention of CNS oxygen toxicity. Quick and focused — about 45–60 minutes if you've done the e-learning beforehand.
Morning – Session 2
Analyser Workshop & Computer Setup
Hands-on with the oxygen analyser — connect it to a tank, purge the sensor, read the percentage, calculate the MOD, and correctly label the cylinder. Then dive computer setup: how to enter your nitrox mix percentage and set the PO₂ alarm threshold. These two practical skills are what make a nitrox diver safe and self-sufficient.
Afternoon (Optional)
Nitrox Dives at Havelock
Put your certification to immediate use. Nitrox tank fills are available (additional charge) for afternoon dives at Nemo Reef, Lighthouse, or Turtle Bay. Dive your favourite site with extended bottom time and notice the difference. Your instructor will buddy you through the first nitrox dive if you want additional confidence before diving independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — it's the opposite. Nitrox actually restricts your maximum depth due to oxygen toxicity limits. On 32% nitrox your Maximum Operating Depth is 34 metres; on 36% it's 28 metres. The benefit of nitrox is extended bottom time at recreational depths (12–25m), not greater depth. If deeper diving is your goal, the RAID Advanced 35 is the course to book.

At 18 metres, standard air gives you a no-decompression limit (NDL) of around 56 minutes. On 32% nitrox that extends to approximately 95 minutes — nearly double. At 20 metres: air gives ~45 minutes, nitrox gives ~80 minutes. The shallower the dive, the greater the benefit. On Havelock's best reef sites at 12–20 metres, nitrox makes a real, noticeable difference to your dive time.

Oxygen is only dangerous at elevated partial pressures — which only occur below your Maximum Operating Depth. When you stay above your MOD (which the course teaches you to calculate and your dive computer enforces automatically), oxygen toxicity risk is effectively zero. The course exists precisely to teach you this — it's a simple calculation and the course takes the mystery out of it completely.

Yes — nitrox certification from any major agency is accepted at all dive centres that offer nitrox fills. RAID, PADI, SSI nitrox cards are interchangeable in practice. Dive centres will ask to see your nitrox cert before filling enriched air tanks; any recognised card satisfies this requirement worldwide.

Yes — and many students do. Adding nitrox to your Open Water or Advanced course lets you complete your certification dives on enriched air, getting more bottom time on your training dives and leaving with two certifications instead of one. Contact us before booking and we'll schedule the nitrox theory on your first day so you can dive nitrox from Day 2.

A nitrox-capable dive computer is strongly recommended for regular nitrox diving — it automatically tracks your oxygen exposure and warns you if you approach MOD. We provide dive computers during the course. If you plan to use nitrox regularly on future trips, investing in your own nitrox computer is worthwhile. We offer student discounts on gear at Frogman.

The listed price of ₹9,500 excludes GST. 18% GST is applicable as per Indian government regulations, bringing the total to ₹11,210. Your invoice will show the full breakdown.

Added the nitrox cert before my fun dive week at Havelock and the difference was immediately obvious. My buddy on air was calling the dive at 45 minutes while I still had plenty of NDL left on my computer. Half-day course, instant benefit on every dive after. Should have done it years ago.

I was nervous about oxygen toxicity before the course — it sounds terrifying on paper. The instructor explained it so clearly that by the end of the morning I wondered why I'd ever been worried. Stick above your MOD, which your computer handles automatically, and there's nothing to worry about. Great course, great team.

Did nitrox alongside my Advanced 35 at Frogman — completed the theory on Day 1 and all my Advanced dives were on enriched air. The extended NDLs meant we could spend more time on the deep skills without rushing the ascent. Highly recommend combining the two if you're planning an Advanced course anyway.

The analyser workshop alone is worth the course fee — knowing how to verify your own gas mix before every dive is a skill every diver should have. The theory is short and the practical is hands-on. Half a day and you leave with a qualification that benefits every future dive you ever make.
