What You Will Learn (The Skills)

This is the key difference between a DSD and a regular Try Dive. In shallow water, you will practice these safety skills:

  • Regulator Recovery: How to find your breathing mouthpiece if it falls out of your mouth.
  • Mask Clearing: How to easily remove water from your mask without surfacing.
  • Equalization: Techniques to keep your ears comfortable as you descend.
  • Buoyancy Control: Basics of using your BCD jacket to float neutrally.

Your DSD Itinerary

Step 1:

Theory Session (30 Mins): Your instructor introduces the equipment and explains the physics of diving using the PADI participant guide. You will understand how diving works.

Step 2:

Confined Water Practice (30 Mins): We head to the shallow water (waist deep). You will kneel down and practice the skills listed above until you feel totally comfortable.

Step 3:

The Open Water Dive (45 Mins): Now the fun begins! We swim out to the reef. You will actually dive, using your new skills to move through the water. We explore the coral gardens and look for marine life.

Step 4:

Debriefing & Logging: Back on land, we log your dive. If you want to continue to the full certification course, your instructor will sign off on your progress.

Discover Scuba Diving FAQs

What is PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) in Andaman?

PADI DSD is a structured half-day scuba experience designed by PADI – the world’s largest dive training agency. Unlike a basic “try dive”, the DSD includes theory, confined water skills training, and a full open water dive. No certification needed, but it counts toward your PADI Open Water if you decide to continue.

What is the difference between a try dive and PADI DSD?

A basic try dive (like our shore dive or boat dive) is a guided experience where you follow your instructor. The PADI DSD teaches you actual diving skills – mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control – making you a more capable and confident diver.

Do I need to know swimming for Discover Scuba Diving at Havelock?

No swimming skills required. You’ll practice all skills in shallow, confined water first. Your PADI instructor is with you throughout the entire experience and controls your buoyancy in open water.

Does the DSD make me a certified diver?

No, the DSD is not a certification course. However, the skills you learn and the dive you log can be credited toward the PADI Open Water course if you decide to get certified during your trip to Andaman.

How long does Discover Scuba Diving take at Havelock?

The full DSD experience takes about 3-4 hours: 30 minutes theory, 30 minutes confined water skills, and 45 minutes open water dive, plus gear fitting and debrief.

Can I take photos during my DSD dive in Andaman?

Your instructor carries a GoPro and captures photos and video throughout your dive. These are included in the price. We don’t recommend bringing your own camera on your first dive – focus on the experience!
