About Nemo Reef Snorkeling

Nemo Reef is the most accessible entry point into Havelock's underwater world - no boat, no tanks, no certification required. You wade in from the beach at Beach No. 2, put your face in the water, and within minutes you're floating above a shallow coral garden at 1–4m depth with clownfish darting in and out of their anemones directly below you.

It's a completely different experience to scuba diving - you stay at the surface, breathing through your snorkel, watching the reef below you. The water here is calm and clear year-round (the bay is sheltered from currents and swell), and the reef is shallow enough that everything is visible in excellent natural light. A GoPro captures your session - 20 photos and 2 videos delivered to your phone on the day.

Snorkeling vs Scuba: Snorkeling keeps you at the surface - you float face-down and observe the reef below through clear water. Scuba diving takes you underwater to explore it directly. If you want to go below the surface, check our Nemo Reef Scuba experience.

What You'll See from the Surface

Nemo Reef's most productive zone sits at 1–4m depth - exactly where snorkelers are. The shallow coral garden is bright, well-lit, and packed with life. Clownfish are the headline, but the reef has far more to offer once you're floating over it.

Guaranteed

  • Clownfish (Nemo) - the namesake of the reef; Amphiprion ocellaris and other species living in their host anemones at 1–3m. They're territorial and will come toward you
  • Sea Anemones - magnificent, bubble-tip, and saddle anemones hosting their clownfish residents
  • Butterflyfish - pairs moving slowly across the coral; easy to observe from the surface
  • Damselfish - small, vivid, and surprisingly aggressive about guarding their patch
  • Coral garden - staghorn, brain, table, and cauliflower corals clearly visible from the surface

Regular Sightings

  • Parrotfish - large, colourful, audible as they bite the coral
  • Surgeonfish & unicornfish - schools drifting through the mid-water
  • Angelfish - multiple species on the reef faces
  • Triggerfish - bold and curious around the coral clusters
  • Snappers - blue-striped schools visible near the sandy patches
  • Groupers - stationary near coral heads; patient to approach
  • Trevally - fast-moving hunters patrolling the reef edge

From the Surface - What Snorkeling Reveals

The advantage of snorkeling at Nemo Reef: the shallow depth means everything is in full natural light. You're looking down at the reef from above, which gives a wide-angle view of the coral garden that scuba divers don't get. The clownfish anemones are particularly striking from directly above.

  • Anemones visible as large, pulsing clusters of colour
  • Clownfish movement is easy to follow - they don't hide from snorkelers
  • The sandy patches between coral heads are visible from the surface - good for spotting flatfish and sea cucumbers
  • Rays occasionally cross the sandy bottom in 3–5m of water - clearly visible from above
  • Pufferfish, boxfish, and rabbitfish commonly seen in the shallow zone

What Scuba Reveals That Snorkeling Doesn't

For the deeper sections (8–15m) - the Jeep wreck, moray eels, nudibranchs, and the second reef structure - you'd need our Nemo Reef Scuba experience. Snorkeling covers the top 1–4m, which contains the clownfish, anemones, and the most colourful section of the reef.

About Nemo Reef

Nemo Reef sits directly off Beach No. 2 (Nemo Beach) in Govind Nagar on Havelock's north shore - a 5-10 minute walk or auto-rickshaw ride from the main jetty. There is no boat involved: you wade in from the beach and the reef begins immediately. It's one of the only reefs in Andaman accessible directly on foot, which is what makes it ideal for snorkeling.

Location

  • Beach: Beach No. 2, Govind Nagar, Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island)
  • GPS: 12.008° N, 92.940° E
  • Distance from jetty: 2–3km (5–10 min by auto)
  • Access: Direct shore entry - wade in from the beach
  • No boat required

Snorkeling Conditions

  • Current: None to minimal - protected bay
  • Visibility: 10–15m typical; 20m+ in December–February
  • Water temperature: 26–29°C year-round
  • Swell: Negligible - sheltered from all wind directions
  • Tide: High tide gives best visibility; still snorkelable at low tide
  • Year-round: Nemo Reef stays calm even during monsoon season - the most reliable snorkeling spot on Havelock

Best Time to Snorkel

  • November–May - peak season; clearest water, calmest conditions
  • December–February - best visibility of the year (up to 20–30m)
  • Morning sessions - best natural light for underwater colour and GoPro photos
  • June–September - still snorkelable (sheltered site) but visibility is reduced; surface chop occasionally present

Reef Zones for Snorkelers

0–1m Sandy entry - wade in from the beach
1–3m Prime snorkel zone - clownfish, anemones, coral garden
3–5m Deeper coral - parrotfish, snappers, rays on sand
5–12m Scuba zone - wreck, moray eels, full reef structure

Why Nemo Reef Works for Snorkeling

  • Shallow reef top - the best marine life (clownfish, anemones) is at 1–3m, directly in the snorkeling zone
  • No current - you can float without effort; no swimming strength required
  • Shore entry - no boat, no surface swim; wade in and you're there
  • Clear water - 10–15m visibility means you see 3–4m of reef below you from the surface
  • Year-round reliability - protected bay stays calm when other sites have surface chop

Frequently Asked Questions

No - we provide a life jacket or buoyancy vest for non-swimmers. The life jacket keeps you effortlessly at the surface so you can float face-down and look at the reef without any swimming effort. Your guide is in the water with you throughout the session. Many first-time snorkelers at Nemo Reef cannot swim at all.

Everything: snorkeling mask, snorkel, and fins; life jacket if needed; guide in the water with you; and GoPro photos and videos (20 photos and 2 videos) delivered to your phone. There are no add-ons to select - the GoPro content is already included in the price.

Yes - clownfish are the reason this reef is called Nemo Reef. They live in sea anemones at 1–3m depth, which is exactly the snorkeling zone. Your guide knows exactly where the anemone colonies are. Clownfish are territorial and will approach you if you stay still - they're protective of their anemone and curious about snorkelers.

Snorkeling keeps you at the surface (1–4m) - you float and look down at the reef through clear water. Scuba diving takes you underwater for 30 minutes at 5–15m depth, with breathing equipment (tank and regulator), letting you move through the reef and explore the coral gardens, wreck structures, and deeper marine life up close. Snorkeling is quicker, simpler, and less expensive - ideal if you want to see the clownfish and reef without going underwater. The scuba experience is ₹2,500 and includes longer underwater time and more GoPro content.

Yes - snorkeling at Nemo Reef is suitable for children aged 6 and above. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also in the water. We fit child-sized masks and fins. The calm, shallow water and the clownfish sightings make it particularly memorable for younger guests. The GoPro content is a great keepsake for families.

Beach No. 2 (Nemo Beach / Govind Nagar) is 2–3km from the main Havelock ferry jetty. Auto-rickshaws and e-bikes are available from the jetty and most hotels. The ride takes 5–10 minutes. Our dive centre is at the beach - look for the Frogman sign. No advance transport booking is needed.

The listed price of ₹1,500 excludes GST. 18% GST applies as per Indian government regulations, bringing the total to ₹1,770. Your invoice will show the full GST breakdown.
