The Dive Experience: Into the Tornado

decorative divider

The boat ride to Barracuda City takes about 25-35 minutes, heading northeast from the main jetty. As you descend along the sloping reef, the first coral formations come into view—and then you spot them.

Hundreds, sometimes thousands of chevron barracudas, their silver bodies catching the light as they move in perfect synchronization. They spiral around the reef in constant motion, shifting from tight tornados to wide, flowing rivers of fish.

The coral belt has soft corals, gorgonians, and anemones hosting clownfish families. Bengal snappers congregate in massive schools, parting around you as you swim through. Sea turtles show up regularly. Both Hawksbill and Green turtles are resident here.

As you navigate along the wall, giant trevallies patrol the edges, occasionally breaking into the barracuda schools in hunting patterns. The water around you is constantly alive with movement. It is a lot to take in, and all of it is good.

Barracuda City is the site I take divers to when I want to blow their minds. The barracuda school here is reliable—they’re residents, not visitors. But it is not just the numbers that make it special, it is the behavior. When the school forms a tornado around a pinnacle, you can position yourself in the center and have 500+ fish spiraling around you. For photographers, it’s one of the best underwater shots you’ll ever get. Just remember: slow movements, no flash, and let the fish come to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

decorative divider

Will I definitely see barracuda at Barracuda City?

Yes! The barracuda school at this site is resident—they live here year-round. Unless conditions are unusually poor, you will encounter the school. The “tornado” formation is more common during calm conditions when the school gathers around the pinnacles.

What certification do I need for Barracuda City?

Open Water (OW) certification is the minimum requirement. However, we recommend at least 10-15 logged dives before visiting this site. The depth (up to 30m) is best suited for experienced OW or Advanced Open Water divers. You need solid buoyancy control to navigate the wall with currents. Advanced Open Water divers will feel most comfortable.

How far is Barracuda City from Havelock?

Barracuda City is located northeast offshore from Havelock Island. The boat journey takes approximately 25-35 minutes from Havelock main jetty (Govind Nagar). It’s one of the more rewarding offshore dive sites.

Is Barracuda City good for underwater photography?

Yes, Barracuda City is one of the best sites in Havelock for wide-angle photography. The tornado formations, massive snapper schools, and dramatic pinnacle topography create stunning compositions. Natural lighting is usually excellent. Bring a wide-angle lens and avoid using flash (it can disperse the fish).

Are the barracudas dangerous?

No. Despite their impressive teeth and predatory appearance, barracudas at dive sites are not aggressive toward divers. They’re curious but maintain distance. Do not wear shiny jewelry (it can look like prey), and never try to touch or chase them. With calm behavior, they will swim around you without concern.
