Scuba Diving for Non Swimmers in Andaman: FAQ

decorative divider

Can non-swimmers do scuba diving in Andaman?

Yes. Non swimmers can do scuba diving in Andaman. All try dives at Frogman are designed for non-swimmers. Your instructor stays with you the entire time and controls your buoyancy and equipment. You breathe normally through a regulator and do not need to swim at all. The instructor guides you along the reef while you float alongside. Hundreds of non swimmers dive with us every season. Read our instructor’s honest take on whether scuba diving in Andaman is safe for non swimmers.

Is scuba diving safe if I cannot swim?

Yes, when done with a reputable dive centre. At Frogman every try dive has a 1-on-1 instructor ratio. Your instructor is a certified professional who briefs you on everything, practises breathing with you in shallow water first, and stays within arm’s reach the whole dive. We use Scubapro equipment that is sanitised and serviced after every use.

How much does scuba diving in Andaman cost for non swimmers?

Scuba diving in Andaman for non swimmers costs from ₹2,500 + GST (shore try dive at Nemo Reef) up to ₹6,500 + GST (premium boat dives at Turtle Beach or Aquarium). PADI Discover Scuba Diving packages run from ₹3,500 + GST to ₹7,500 + GST. All prices include a dedicated instructor, underwater photos, and videos.

What is the difference between a try dive and PADI Discover Scuba?

A try dive is a guided underwater experience where the instructor handles everything. PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a more structured programme that includes theory, confined water skills practice, and a proper ocean dive . DSD gives you a PADI credit that counts toward your Open Water certification if you decide to continue. If you want a more complete intro to diving, DSD is the better pick.

Which package should a non swimmer choose?

If you want the most affordable option: Nemo Reef (₹2,500 + GST, shore dive). If you want a better site: Red Pillar (₹3,500 + GST, boat dive). If you want a boat trip and deeper reef: Tribe Gate (₹4,500 + GST). For premium sites: Juvi’s, Lighthouse, or Slope (₹5,500 + GST). For the best sites: Turtle Beach or Aquarium (₹6,500 + GST).

What age limits apply for beginner scuba diving?

Most beginner try dives accept participants from 10 years and above. There is no upper age limit, but anyone over 50 or with medical conditions such as asthma, heart issues, or epilepsy needs a doctor’s clearance before diving. We recommend bringing a signed medical form from your home city to avoid delays in Havelock.

How deep do non swimmers go during a try dive?

Try dives for non swimmers typically go to 5 to 12 metres depth, depending on the site and your comfort level. The shore dive at Nemo Reef is usually 5 to 8 metres. Boat dives reach 8 to 12 metres. Your instructor adjusts the depth based on how comfortable you feel underwater.

How long does a beginner scuba dive last?

The underwater portion of a try dive lasts 30 minutes. The total experience including briefing, gearing up, shallow practice, the dive itself, and returning takes about 1 to 1.5 hours for shore dives and 2 to 3 hours for boat dives. PADI Discover Scuba is a full-day programme.

What should I bring for a beginner dive in Havelock?

Just bring a swimsuit or comfortable clothes you can get wet in, a towel, and sunscreen. We provide all scuba equipment: BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, tank, and weights. If you wear contact lenses, you can dive with them under a mask. We also provide drinking water and changing facilities at our centre.

When is the best season for beginner diving in Andaman?

The best conditions run from October to May when seas are calm, visibility is highest (15 to 30 metres), and water temperature is a comfortable 27 to 30 degrees. December to February is peak tourist season, so book early. We operate year-round but monsoon months (June to September) can bring rougher seas.

Do I get photos and videos of my dive?

Yes. All try dives at Frogman include complimentary underwater photos and video. Our instructors capture your experience with underwater cameras and share the files with you the same day. This is included in the price at no extra charge.

Can I get certified after doing a beginner dive?

If you enjoy your try dive and want to dive independently, the next step is a certification course. PADI Open Water (4 days, ₹28,000 + GST) or RAID Open Water 20 (3-4 days, ₹28,000 + GST) will certify you to dive to 18-20 metres worldwide. If you did a PADI Discover Scuba, your DSD counts as credit toward your Open Water course.

Scuba Diving in Andaman for Non Swimmers: How It Works

wave divider

Scuba diving in Andaman for non swimmers is what we do every day at Frogman in Havelock Island. Every try dive is guided by a dedicated instructor who stays with you underwater the entire time. You breathe normally through a regulator, and your instructor handles all the equipment and buoyancy - your only job is to relax and enjoy the reef.

Havelock offers some of the best conditions in India for first-time divers: warm water at 27 to 30 degrees year-round, visibility of 15 to 25 metres, and coral reefs full of clownfish, sea turtles, and tropical fish just minutes from shore. Whether you choose a shore dive from the beach or a boat dive to deeper sites, you will see real marine life from your very first dive. See all packages and prices for non swimmers.

Do you really need to know swimming?

No. The idea that you must know swimming before you can scuba dive is the most common doubt we clear up on the phone. At the surface your diving jacket is inflated, so you float whether you can swim or not. Under water, your instructor controls your depth and movement for you. The only skill you actually use is breathing through the regulator, and you practise that while standing in waist-deep water until it feels normal. Most guests tell us the breathing felt strange for the first two or three minutes and then they forgot about it.

Havelock, North Bay or Neil: where should a non swimmer dive?

You can do scuba diving in Andaman for non swimmers at three main places: North Bay near Port Blair, Bharatpur Beach on Neil Island, and Havelock. North Bay is convenient if you only have a day in Port Blair, but it is also the busiest dive point in the islands, and in season you can spend more time waiting on the beach than breathing under water. Neil is quieter, though the dive scene there is small and slots fill up fast.

Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) is called the scuba capital of India for a reason. Nemo Reef sits at 6 to 12 metres with a sandy, walk-in entry from the beach, the water stays 27 to 30 degrees through the year, and visibility runs 15 to 25 metres on good days. Instructors here take non swimmers under water every day of the season, so the whole process, from briefing to photos, runs without confusion.

What keeps you safe under water

Every try dive at Frogman runs on a 1:1 ratio, one instructor for one guest, and that does not change in peak season. Before the dive, your instructor teaches you a few simple hand signals, shows you how to release the pressure in your ears as you go down, and practises mask clearing with you in shallow water. During the dive they stay within arm's reach and hold your jacket whenever you want the extra assurance. Depth stays between 5 and 12 metres, shallower if you ask.

Tips before you book

October to May is the best window for scuba diving in Andaman, and morning slots usually get the calmest water. In December and January it is worth booking a day or two ahead. Eat a light breakfast, skip alcohol the night before, and keep a gap of at least 12 hours between your dive and your return flight, 18 to 24 hours is safer. We explain the reason in why you cannot fly right after scuba diving. Try dives cost ₹2,500 to ₹6,500 + GST depending on the site, DSD programmes run ₹3,500 to ₹7,500 + GST, and pickup and drop is free within 5 km of the dive centre.
